MELBOURNE THEATRE | COMMUNITY THEATRE | AMATEUR THEATRE | FRINGE THEATRE | LIVE THEATRE SwampFox is the brainchild of Director John Bishop and his wife Loretta. We wanted a brand name that was cheeky, suggested informality and perhaps was a tad irreverent. SwampFox fitted the bill for us on all counts. For those of you who may remember the old 50’s television series of the same name, part of the theme was; ‘Swamp Fox, Swamp Fox hiding in the Glen, He runs away to fight again’ This also forms the basis of our philosophy in that we will be turning our attention to projects we consider to be of undeniable quality, that never get an ‘airing’ by the established groups; who may consider them to be too marginal or niche to have mass appeal. As a main stream Director of some 30 years standing, I understand theatre companies trying to package their year as diversely as possible (without offending), their subscribers. But therein lies the problem ... Any shows that may engage and/or challenge the audience; but could also include controversial adult themes, nudity or coarse language tend to be ruled out, thus depriving their audience of a possible voyage of discovery. SwampFox see itself, not so much competing, but rather complimenting the mainstream with its brand of edgy, compelling and at times confrontational style of pure/minimalist theatre. There will be no structured plays from a home base, but rather a flexible approach to only presenting material that we believe ‘fits’ our criteria. So, like the original SwampFox,…We may spend time ‘Hiding in the Glen’, until a worthy project has us coming out to ‘Fight again’. John Bishop |
